FDM Print Troubleshooter →

Pick a symptom — stringing, warping, bed adhesion, under-extrusion, layer shifts, top-layer gaps and more — and walk a yes/no diagnostic tree to a ranked cause list, each with a concrete setting fix and confidence. Deep-linkable per symptom.

Slicers

OrcaSlicer

open-source Free

Community-driven fork of Bambu Studio with broad printer support — calibration wizards for flow, pressure advance, and max volumetric speed; presets shipped for Bambu, Voron, Creality, Prusa, and many open-frame machines.

Our take

The default recommendation for most users in 2026. The built-in calibration tower generator alone saves hours over manual tuning. Profile updates lag a few weeks behind hardware launches; check the official OrcaSlicer Discord before assuming a new printer is supported.

Bambu Studio

AGPLv3 Free

Bambu Lab's official slicer — derived from PrusaSlicer / SuperSlicer with first-party support for the X1 Carbon, P1 series, A-series, and the AMS multi-material system.

Our take

Required if you want full AMS swap automation, cloud monitoring, and live print stats on Bambu printers. Profiles for non-Bambu printers exist but are unofficial; Orca is the better choice for mixed-fleet desks.

PrusaSlicer

AGPLv3 Free

Prusa Research's flagship slicer — origin of the Bambu/Orca lineage. First-class support for Prusa MK4, Mini, XL, and SL1; large community library of third-party printer profiles.

Our take

Still the strongest slicer if you primarily own Prusa hardware or value extremely stable releases. Pressure advance calibration is less automated than Orca; the variable-layer-height tool, however, is best-in-class.

SuperSlicer

AGPLv3 Free

Power-user PrusaSlicer fork — exposes additional infill patterns, advanced calibration tools, and finer control over seam placement and ironing.

Our take

Niche but useful for users who want maximum tuning surface. Development has slowed; Orca has absorbed many of its best features. Recommended only if you specifically need its unique infill patterns.

Cura

LGPLv3 Free

UltiMaker's long-running slicer — broad printer compatibility, large plugin ecosystem, accessible UI for beginners.

Our take

Still useful for very specific Ultimaker workflows and as a teaching tool. For day-to-day FDM in 2026, Orca produces faster, cleaner prints with less manual tweaking.

Model Marketplaces

MakerWorld

proprietary Free

Bambu Lab's model platform with auto-generated print profiles, AMS color mapping, and creator point rewards redeemable for filament credit.

Our take

Profile quality is the highest in the category — most prints succeed on first attempt with default settings. Best paired with a Bambu printer; non-Bambu users can still download STLs but lose the auto-profile benefit.

Printables

proprietary Free

Prusa's free model platform — strong moderation, contest-driven content, and monthly prizes paid in Prusa filament credit.

Our take

Best curation in the space. The 'Featured Today' list is genuinely worth browsing. Profile auto-import works with PrusaSlicer; manual extraction is straightforward for other slicers.

Thingiverse

proprietary Free

The original model marketplace — enormous historical archive, weak moderation, slow site.

Our take

Still the largest collection of legacy models. Increasingly mirror-hosted on Printables. Useful only if you're chasing a specific older design that hasn't been re-uploaded.

Cults3D

proprietary Free + Paid

European-based marketplace with strong focus on premium paid models — designers split revenue at 80/20.

Our take

Goes-to for high-quality paid STLs, especially miniatures, props, and articulated designs. Free section is smaller but well-curated.

Thangs

proprietary Free + Paid

Geometric search across multiple model repositories — paste a screenshot and find similar shapes; aggregated metadata across Printables, Thingiverse, and original uploads.

Our take

The reverse-image search alone makes it worth bookmarking. Less original content than Printables; useful as a meta-index.

Calibration & Utilities

Teaching Tech Calibration Site

open-source Free

Web-based generator for first-layer squares, temperature towers, retraction patterns, and tolerance tests — generates STL or G-code per printer.

Our take

Goes-to for any new printer setup. The first-layer square plus a quick temperature tower covers 80% of initial tuning.

Klipper

GPLv3 Free

High-performance firmware that offloads motion planning to a Raspberry Pi or similar — enables input shaping, pressure advance, and faster print speeds on hardware that would otherwise stutter.

Our take

Required reading for anyone running a custom or Voron machine. The setup curve is real; budget a weekend. Stock-firmware printers with input shaping built in (Bambu, newer Prusa, K1) no longer need Klipper for speed alone.

Mainsail

GPLv3 Free

Web UI for Klipper — print management, real-time temperature charts, macros, webcam streaming.

Our take

The cleanest Klipper UI as of 2026. Fluidd is a reasonable alternative with similar feature parity.

Bambu Handy

proprietary Free

Bambu's mobile app — print monitoring, AMS status, MakerWorld browsing.

Our take

Useful for cloud monitoring when away from your machine. Requires Bambu cloud connection; LAN-only operation is fine but loses mobile remote-control features.

CAD Software

FreeCAD

LGPLv2 Free

Parametric open-source CAD — full sketch-based modeling, assemblies, drawings; the 1.0 release in late 2024 dramatically improved sketch solver and topological naming.

Our take

Now genuinely viable for hobbyist and small-shop work after the 1.0 release. The Realthunder branch is no longer needed for most users. Tutorial coverage is finally catching up.

Onshape

proprietary Free (public) / Paid (private)

Browser-based parametric CAD — all files public on the free tier, full assembly modeling, version history, and PDM built in.

Our take

The strongest free option if you're comfortable making your designs public. The free tier is generous; the paid plans become expensive quickly.

Fusion 360

proprietary Free (personal) / Paid

Autodesk's parametric + direct hybrid CAD with CAM, simulation, and rendering.

Our take

The most capable single CAD package for makers. The free personal license has shrunk over the years (10 active files, no rapid render farm); still usable for most 3D printing work. Watch for further restrictions.
